Monopsony in the US Labor Market

چکیده
This paper quantifies employer market power in US manufacturing and how it has changed over time. Using administrative data, we estimate plant-level markdowns—the ratio between a plant’s marginal revenue product of labor its wage. We find most plants operate monopsonistic environment, with an average markdown 1.53, implying worker earning only 65 cents on the dollar generated. To investigate long-term trends for entire sector, propose novel, theoretically grounded measure aggregate markdown. that decreased late 1970s early 2000s, but been sharply increasing since. Monopsony power and relative wages in the labor market for nurses.
This paper examines the thesis that monopsony power is an important determinant of wages in nursing labor markets. Using data from the 1985-93 Current Population Surveys, measures of relative nurse/non-nurse wage rates for 252 labor markets are constructed. Contrary to predictions from the monopsony model, no positive relationship exists between relative nursing wages and hospital density or ma...
متن کاملIs There Monopsony in the Labor Market? Evidence from a Natural Experiment
Recent theoretical and empirical advances have renewed interest in monopsonistic models of the labor market. However, there is little direct empirical support for these models. We use an exogenous change in wages at Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) hospitals as a natural experiment to investigate the extent of monopsony in the nurse labor market. We estimate that labor supply to individual h...
متن کاملEvidence of Monopsony in the Labor Market of a Developing Country
Firms are able to behave monopsonistically because of frictions in the labor market. While there is evidence that these frictions lead to labor market power in specific cases in developed countries, this paper argues these frictions are much more evident in developing countries and therefore monopsonistic behavior is more likely to occur. This paper measures monopsony by structurally estimating...
متن کاملForeign-born nurses in the US labor market.
This paper examines immigration and the wages of foreign and native nurses in the US labor market. Data from the Current Population Survey identifies a worker's country of birth and the National Survey of Registered Nurses (NSRN) identifies nurses who received their basic training outside the US. In 2004 about 3.1% of the registered nurse (RN) workforce is foreign-born non-US citizens, and 3.3%...
متن کاملWhat Labor Market Theory Tells Us about the "New Economy"
The average unemployment rate for 1997 was 4.9 percent, well below most estimates of the nonaccelerating inflation rate of unemployment (NAIRU).1 One would therefore have expected to see an increase in inflation in 1997; yet, as measured by the CPI, inflation fell from 3.3 percent to 1.7 percent (December to December). This phenomenon of low unemployment accompanied by falling inflation has pro...
